UDIA welcomes the announcement that the Lake Macquarie Mines Fund stage 1 is now underway to scope the full project.
We applaud Lake Macquarie City Council on their initiative to secure federal funding for this crucial program, which will solve a major challenge for developing in Lake Macquarie. The program will provide certainty on the costs to fill legacy mine voids which will enable historical mine sites to be repurposed to deliver the housing and jobs needed in Lake Macquarie.
“With housing targets set to rise to meet the NSW commitments under the National Housing Accord, UDIA believes Lake Macquarie and the Lower Hunter are capable of delivering much more housing if development risks can be managed. The Lake Macquarie Mines Fund will go a long way toward lowering risk to develop in Lake Macquarie,” said Jeffrey Bretag, UDIA Hunter Chapter Chair.

The program is modelled on the very successful Newcastle Mines Grouting Fund that enabled much of Newcastle’s recent revitalisation.
