This week saw a number of important investment announcements by the Federal Government which have the potential to unlock housing in key areas of NSW.
“With poor economic feasibility leading to low apartment completions, the need for infrastructure to support homes, particularly in greenfield locations, has never been more important,” said Stuart Ayres, CEO, Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW (UDIA).
The $580 million investment by the Albanese Government into vital flood evacuation routes and road connections in Sydney’s Northwest Growth Area – including funding Stage 1 of the Townson Road and Burdekin Road Project – will better connect residents with Richmond Road – one of the region’s designated evacuation routes.
UDIA has been calling for greater investment in flood mitigation infrastructure and evacuation routes on behalf of our members in the housing and property industry for many years.
“Improving flood evacuation routes is good public policy and a smart use of taxpayers funds. It helps people leave higher risk locations without the need to limit the opportunity for more homes in areas that aren’t flood prone, but are located adjacent to evacuation corridors,” said Stuart Ayres.
The joint investment by the Federal and NSW Governments for the upgrade of Fifteenth Avenue in Aerotropolis will help connect Western Sydney International Airport to the Liverpool CBD. This road upgrade is vital in connecting Liverpool to the world and has been a key priority of UDIA’s advocacy for greater road and transport connectivity throughout the Aerotropolis.
“Upgrading Fifteenth Avenue helps realise the full potential of the new airport not just by connecting Liverpool with employment opportunities, but by helping unlock much-needed housing supply to the area,” said Mr. Ayres.
The third announcement this week of over $182 million in 9 critical infrastructure projects in high growth areas that have the potential to unlock more than 25,000 new homes across NSW. UDIA NSW has consistently advocated for greater government investment in housing enabling infrastructure such as roads, sewage and water and this investment is a welcome step.
“This investment in new road and community infrastructure is incredibly welcomed, particularly as the NSW Government continues to track well below its own housing targets,” said Mr Ayres.
